Elective, Fall 2024
Tim Anstey

Part of the OCCAS series Exhibiting Architecture, this seminar contributes to the exhibition Lady Anne Clifford: Building Attributes, which will open at Abbott Hall Museum, Cumbria, UK, in April 2025. Anne Clifford moved in life from being a wronged 17th century heiress to a powerful political actor, and used representation, archival research, building and physical travel to secure her ends. The installation at Abbott Hall will explore the relations between architecture, dress, room and landscape through studying how Clifford redefined her surroundings as “attributes”, identifying her person with lands, titles, buildings and histories. The exhibition is curated by Professor Judith Clark of the London College of Fashion and is a collaboration between AHO, LCF and Lakeland Arts in Cumbria. In the seminar students are asked to employ architectural means – scanning, model-making and drawing – to make archival information speak.
