Bjørg Agasøster
Bjørg Agasøster is a PhD fellow in architectural history, examining the formation, circulation, and material practices of the brick tenement (murgård) in Oslo from the mid nineteenth century onward. Her research investigates the theoretical, ideological, and social frameworks that shaped building practices in the period and how architectural ideas and construction cultures travelled between European cities. Agasøster’s work integrates architectural history with material studies, focusing on how construction methods, craft knowledge, and regulatory frameworks shaped the structure and everyday functioning of the tenements.
Before joining the doctoral program, Agasøster worked at the Norwegian Institute for Cultural Heritage Research (NIKU), researching the impact of climate change on protected buildings, as well as doing architectural documentation and heritage assessment. She holds a Master of Architecture from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) and is co-author of the book Murgården. Oslos europeiske ansikt (with V. Trædal, 2025) on Oslo’s brick tenements, situating the type within European architectural and urban history.
